I joined Aberdeen Silver City Surfers in the early days as a learner, a Hospitality Volunteer and, now, am the Chair of the Management Committee. All because I thought it important that older people should be able to use the internet. My career ran through teaching to youth work and then community development. These interests were important in fifteen years on the council and, still, I like politics, Aberdeen Football Club and koalas.

My name is Colin and for the last 5 years I have volunteered at Silver City Surfers as a tutor. I am also on the committee and a trustee of Surfers. I find the work very rewarding as it is great to see people being able to communicate with friends and family, especially abroad. It is fantastic to see the joy of parents and grandparents being able to see their families in a “real time” basis.

Whether it is learning how to set up an email account, surf the net or type some labels, it is all worthwhile at the end of the day. It is a great opportunity to meet lots of people, tutors and customers alike. There is also a great social aspect with people meeting, having coffee and swapping tales and chatting.

I’ve been a volunteer with the Surfers since 2011. Although I was a lecturer in Computer Science before I retired, this does NOT mean that I know any more about Facebook, iPads, Windows 8, etc. than the next volunteer – probably less in fact! My other interests are singing with Aberdeen Bach Choir and hill walking – 115 Munros to do and counting …

I love my work! Our volunteers are a talented, dedicated and diverse group of individuals and to support them and what they provide to help people keep in touch with technology is a real privilege. The Schools’ Squad Project is a great way of getting out and about into different communities within Aberdeen and the teachers, pupils and participants are a pleasure to work with.

In my spare time I like to juggle, read – my favourite book so far is between ‘The Garden of Evening Mists’ and ‘Bel Canto’. I enjoy getting out and about in the garden and, occasionally, play the piano. I’m a keen photographer.

I enjoy working with such a great bunch of people and getting the chance to meet so many lovely folk with such interesting stories. I get to work with an amazing group of volunteers who give their time so generously in sharing their knowledge with older people in various communities around Aberdeen.

In my spare time, I enjoy walking and reading and also pottering in my garden. I love languages and trying new foods as well as spending time with family and friends.
